For his failure to fully cooperate with the congressional committee investigating the insurrection and attempted coup at the U.S. Capitol this January, former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was held in contempt of Congress late Tuesday in a 222-208 vote. Just two Republicans joined with Democrats on the vote: Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. Meadows spent weeks obfuscating the Jan. 6 Committee, which subpoenaed him for records and testimony they said were critical to understanding precisely how former President Donald Trump pushed to subvert democracy and overturn the rightful electoral and popular victory of Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Meadows was first hit with a subpoena in September, and over several weeks of private negotiations with the former North Carolina congressman and his lawyer, George Terwilliger III, the Jan. 6 committee came to impasse after impasse over Meadows’ claims to executive privilege over the documents. It wasn’t until the threat of contempt was dangled before him just a few weeks ago that he finally started to remit records to the committee—roughly 9,000 pages. Read more
