In Detroit’s East Side, the Dutch-born artist Anders Ruhwald converts an abandoned, crumbling building into a stunning all-black installation. The installation, “Unit 1: 3583 Dubois,” is located inside the apartment building, reports dezeen.Dating back to 1910, its original address – “3583 Dubois,” – from which the installation gets its name no longer exists. The brick building, that was given a new address of “2170 Mack Avenue,” was purchased by Anders Ruhwald in 2014, and has been working ever since to create the immersive installation, which is meant to honor the building’s history. The 7,000-square-foot building has undergone a meticulous change and is meant to act as a memorial, the dezeen report informs.“The permanent installation is both a memorial and a proposal in which materials and forms coalesce to retell, and thus reclaim the past, animate the present, and suggest a shifted future,” the artist said to dezeen. “It is a subtle change, but one that underscores a metaphoric loss of this place’s history. Like so many in Detroit and cities like it, this once-abandoned building holds memories waiting to be erased or revived.”Several hallways and eight, full-sized rooms have been converted into dark, windowless spaces with abstract ceramic sculptures made by Ruhwald. For his work, Ruhwald makes use of charred wood, molten glass, and lead shingles as the primary materials. Throughout the dwelling, Ruhwald used repurposed materials he found in the building and the surrounding neighborhood. Across the installation, fire is a key element that serves as a material, process, and subject matter become the vehicle for Ruhwald’s exploration of destruction and renewal. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
