She wears a shaved crested hairstyle that all Birifor must wear when introducing her son to the joro. Lobi, Burkina Faso. Hardwood, old patina of use, accidents, wear and small lack of seniority, traces of fire in the lower part. H. 80 cm. Estimate: 5,000 € - 7,000 € (5,616 USD – 7,863 USD)— Lot 48: “A rare sculpture, ridge of box, carved in a root of tree fern, representing a large stylized head and a reptile in the back.” This sculpture is comparable, and very similar, to another work collected by Marcel Evrard and Pierre Langlois in the 1960s, published by Galerie Jeanne Bucher n ° 26 to 28 of the catalog Sculpture Monumentale D'Oceanie, Ed. In the end, little is known about these so-called ceremonial paddles, except that they were collected in large numbers in the 19th century. One source nonetheless (Brunor 1969 p.7) mentions the fact that they were willing when one leader visited another. Anyway they are among the most incredibly crafted Oceanian sculptures.
