TAG Heuer introduced the radical Heuer Monaco timepiece in March 1969, and to mark its 50th year the company is launching several new limited edition models.When the Heuer Monaco was launched, the company billed it as “an unconventional timepiece that introduced two cutting-edge world firsts.” However, its introduction at a press conference held in New York and Geneva on March 3, 1969, did not result in an enthusiastic reception. Fifty years on, the Monaco has become a symbol of TAG Heuer's vision and pioneering spirit, and is instantly recognizable. Named after the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, the original watch featured several radical elements, including a metallic blue dial, a square case, and a crown on the left-hand side along with red and light blue hands. Onboard the timepiece was a water-resistant square case and the Calibre 11, the first automatic-winding chronograph movement.Since then, the Monaco has gone through a number of makeovers and a popular edition came with a black anodized case and was billed as “The Dark Lord.” The watch was also notably worn by Steve McQueen in the movie “Le Mans” and he had a special relationship with the Monaco. It was also re-launched in 1998 and since then many versions have been created with new complications.To mark 50 years of the timepiece, new versions of the original will be unveiled at events that will be held in Europe, the U.S., and Asia throughout 2019, and the TAG Heuer has already showcased one of these the Monaco 50.
