What: Ancient Art, Coins and AntiquitiesWhere: Pax Romana Auctions; 25 Bury Place, Bloomsbury, London, WC1A 2JH, United KingdomWhen: March 17; 01.00 PM GMTTop lots at the sale:— “Rare Greek Chalcidian Helmet with Horns of Zeus Amun.” An important bronze helmet formed from two curved segments, each with a flared rim, nasal, raised panels to the upper section of the bowl, repousse ridge forming curved brows; integral cheek-plate to each side, curved with a straight forward edge; and attached with hinges as separate pieces. The helmet is decorated with the Horns of Zeus Amun symbol, possibly used by a soldier who fought under Alexander III the Great. The item comes with a COA and custom made stand. 285mm, 930 grams. ca.500-400 BC - Property of a Manchester collector; acquired in the 1980s. All items come with Free International postage, accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Estimate: 15,000 GBP - 20,000 GBP (19,764 USD – 26,352 USD)— “Rare Egyptian Gilded Bronze Figure of Ibis.” The sacred bird of the moon god Thoth, seated in an alert attitude with the neck arched back, the tear shaped convex eyes finely modelled, the tail feathers and leg markings carefully engraved. 195mm, 490 grams. ca.664-332 BC. Estimate: 10,000 GBP - 15,000 GBP (13,176 USD - 19,764 USD)— “Important Roman Silver Patera.” This bowl in deep form is lathe-turned, concentric rings adorn the underside, the interior of the rim rounded, a single groove; the handle with curving arms emerging with the rim in the form of birds facing inwards, their tail feathers portrayed along the edge, the upper section of the flat waisted handle finely engraved, with two scroll-shaped tendrils emerging from the birds' mouths and meeting at the base of a long shaft, with a blossom at each end, issuing stippled vines and berry clusters, centered by a knotted fillet, the ties flowing down, the rounded terminal with two facing griffin heads, with downturned open beaks and flowing beards, a rosette in between. 223 mm, 273 grams. ca.100 AD. Estimate: 6,000 GBP - 10,000 GBP (7,905 USD – 13,176 USD)— “Rare Scandinavian Viking Silver Pendant with Odin.” An important Viking Scandinavian silver mythological pendant depicting God Odin gripping two Ravens Huginn and Muninn; intact integral loop. In Norse mythology, Huginn and Muninn are a pair of ravens that fly all over the world and bring information to the god Odin. Huginn and Muninn are attested in the “Poetic Edda,” compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources: the “Prose Edda,” and “Heimskringla,” written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson; in the “Third Grammatical Treatise,” compiled in the 13th century by Olafr Þorðarson; and in the poetry of skalds. The names of the ravens are sometimes modernly anglicized as Hugin and Munin. 28mm, 7,3 grams. ca.900 BC -10 AD.
