What: Fine and Rare WinesWhere: Bonhams; 220 San Bruno Avenue, San Francisco CA 94103, USAWhen: March 15, 10 AM PDTPublic Viewing: Mon - Thurs, February 25 - 28 from 9 am to 5pmTop lots of the sale:- Chateau Haut-Brion 1989: Graves 1er Grand Cru Classe. (4 scuffed labels). 4 bottles. This continues to be one of the immortal wines and one of the greatest young Bordeaux wines of the last half-century. Consistently prodigious and almost a sure bet to top the scoring card of any blind tasting of this vintage as well as other years, the 1989 Haut-Brion is a seamless, majestic classic, and a tribute to this phenomenal terroir and its singular characteristics. The wine still has a very thick, viscous-looking ruby/purple color, a spectacular, young but awesome smorgasbord of aromas ranging from scorched earth, liquid minerals, graphite, blackberry and black currant jam to toast, licorice, and spice box. The levels of fruit, extract, and glycerin in this viscous, full-bodied, low-acid wine are awe-inspiring. The brilliant symmetry of the wine, extraordinary purity, and seamlessness are the hallmarks of a modern-day legend. Estimate: US$ 5,000 - 7,000- Clos de Vougeot 2002: Domaine Leroy. (1 lightly stained, 2 lightly scuffed and torn labels, 1 scuffed capsule). 2 bottles. Classic Clos de Vougeot in every respect as this is austere, backward, earthy and intense yet blessed with stunning power and incredible richness plus a finish that etches itself into the palate and lasts for minutes. This is quite ripe with notes of coffee and even a hint of torrefaction yet the overall effect is one of brooding power and while it's not quite as structured as the Richebourg, it is every bit as complex with remarkably refined tannins. In short, this is an incredibly powerful and rich wine that offers superb delineation. Estimate: US$ 3,500 - 4,500- Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008. 6 bottles. The wine fleshes out beautifully in the glass as it shows off its class and true pedigree. This is a decidedly ripe, forward vintage, but in exchange the wine will drink well right out of the gate. Estimate: US$ 3,000 - 4,000- Bond Red 2007 (1 magnum): Melbury; Bond Red 2007 (1 magnum): Pluribus (slightly protruding capsule, signs of past seepage); Bond Red 2007 (1 magnum): Quella (signs of past seepage); Bond Red 2007 (1 magnum); St. Eden Bond Red 2007 (1 magnum); Vecina: owc - 5 magnums. Estimate: US$ 2,800 - 3,800- Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion 2005: Graves Cru Classe. 6 bottles. Dense and sweet but youthfully tight; a serious young wine with terrific verve and the acid/tannin backbone to support a long and glorious evolution in bottle. Very long on the back end, with mouth-saturating fruit and tannins. Like La Chapelle-and in direct contrast to Bahans and Haut-Brion-this is quite backward today, and almost certain to merit a higher rating in the future. Estimate: US$ 2,200 - 3,000- Musigny, Cuvee Vieilles Vignes 2007: Comte de Vogue. (1 lightly bin-soiled, 1 lightly loose, 1 scuffed and 3 lightly wrinkled labels). 6 bottles. The step up in class is unmistakable with gorgeously complex, even kaleidoscopic and superbly elegant red, black and violet aromas trimmed with a dazzling array of spices, earth and a hint of smoke that adds unmistakable luster to the round, intense, muscular and exceptionally stylish broad-scaled flavors that possess excellent power and a building intensity that develops from the mid-palate to the explosive yet seductive finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the sappy and mineral-infused finish that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the firm tannins. This is a big '07 built on a base of firm minerality but it remains impeccably well balanced and should live for decades so patience is definitely a virtue if you are a potential buyer. Estimate: US$ 2,200 - 3,000- Chambertin 2014: Rousseau. 2 bottles. There is enough wood to notice framing the exuberantly spicy red and dark currant aromas that display an abundance of sauvage and earth nuances. The cool and pure medium weight plus flavors are remarkably refined for a young Chambertin yet there is clearly plenty of power lurking beneath the refined veneer.
