Moscow-based designer Alex Shtanuk has launched an Indiegogo campaign for his 107,000-square-foot (10,000-square-meter) blanket woven from more than 3000 NASA Space blankets held together with 40 km of reinforced tape, to feature at this year’s Burning Man festival at Black Rock City, Nevada from August 26 through September 3.The huge reflective installation will bring the waves of the ancient Lake Lahontan back to Playa. The Blanket will be constantly changing its silhouette by the power of wind, taking different surreal forms — waves, mountains, or some giant fantastic sculptures. The silver side of the Blanket is coated with metallic agent that reflects up to 97% of the radiated heat. During the hot daytime, room under the Blanket will be used as a comfy and refreshing rest area, where anyone can relax, chill, have a nap or dance. At night, hundreds of people in el-wire suits will get together under the blanket creating an effect of oceanic bioluminescent plankton or moving waves of equalizer.Shtanuk aims at bringing a safe and friendly gathering space into the hot desert. “Ever since we were children and throughout our lives, we share the space under the blanket with lovers, friends, and family,” Designboom quoted Shtanuk. “Under the blanket, there are no strangers,” he says.Shtanuk has started an Indiegogo campaign with a goal of $17,500 to raise enough money for the materials, transportation, rent, etc., and make the installation happen. To back the project, donors can buy a dusty piece of ‘the blanket’ for $15 to $10,000, depending on its size.Alex Shtanuk set a smaller version of the installation at “Archsroyanie” festival in Russia last year.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
