Gallery Pangolin in Chalford is celebrating the work of Anita Mandl, one of the gallery’s longest-standing gallery artists, with the solo exhibition titled “Anita Mandl: The Works.”10 years on from the gallery’s last solo exhibition of Mandl’s work, the show include sculptures in wood, stone, bronze and silver from all periods of Mandl’s oeuvre.“Many of these works come from the artist’s own collection and have never previously been exhibited. The gallery has also included a brand new enlargement of one her most popular pieces, ‘Otter and Cub,’” says the gallery.Anita Mandl was born in Prague. She trained as a zoologist and studied sculpture at the Birmingham College of Art. She is a member of the Royal West of England Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.Mandl is first and foremost a carver, working in from the outer limits of a block of ornamental stone or wood to create smooth, rounded and tightly-honed animal forms. The highly polished, seductive surfaces and varied colors of her selected materials make her sculptures irresistibly tactile and joyful to contemplate. Not only are the works beautifully conceived and executed but they also conform to the characteristics of their individual species. Her carvings, mostly in stone, are cast into editions in bronze and silver. Her deep knowledge of animal anatomy and behavior informs her sculptures which are skilfully pared down to convey the very nature of a species. Their economy of language, their smooth and lustrous surfaces, together express the essential characteristics of an animal. The Royal West of England Academy has hosted a major solo exhibition of Mandl’s work and the Zoological Society of London has used her sculpture as prizes for the Stamford Raffles Award. She exhibits regularly and widely in England and the Channel Islands. “Anita Mandl: The Works” is on view through July 27, 2018 at Gallery Pangolin, 9 Chalford Ind.
