Snohetta recently unveiled images of their proposed design for a new 16,000 square foot planetarium and visitor’s center in the north of Oslo. Designed for Norway’s largest astronomical facility, the planetarium will be nestled in a dense 28-mile forest, and will feature “interstellar cabins” resembling small planets, noted ArchDaily. The facilities will be used for activities related to astronomy, natural science, sun studies, exploring the night sky and the Northern Lights.Snohetta stated in a press release: “Fulfilling the Institute’s mission to enlighten the public about the wonders of the universe, the new Snohetta designed astronomical facility is designed to inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity as if the architecture itself was asking the question: Where does the Universe come from?”Simple principles of astronomy inspired the design; for instance the cabins surround the planetarium mimicking the planet orbits around the sun. Equipped to accommodate 120 guests, the facility will engage the visitors in an “intellectual, visual, tactile journey into the realm of astronomy,” ArchDaily writes.The Planetarium design is inspired by the world’s first planetarium conceived by Archimedes in 250 BC. As one approaches the planetarium, a roof of planted grass and bushes emerges from the ground, gradually revealing the three-story, 100-seat theatre. “The dome-shaped celestial theater educates visitors about the night sky, offering a realistic projection of stars, planets and celestial objects,” stated ArchDaily.
