WATG Urban’s revolutionary 3D-printed house “Curve Appeal” has entered the development phase. The project won the first prize in “The Freeform Home Design Challenge” in 2016 and is now coming to life. The “wall section testing, research and development phase” has begun and ground-breaking is anticipated later this year, noted ArchDaily. When complete, “Curve Appeal” will change the way complex, freeform structures are constructed. WATG Urban were inspired by the Case Study Houses of 1945-1966, which reinvented the modern house with the use of minimalist materials and open-plan living spaces, striving to make the construction process easy and less expensive. The architects have used the “same modernist design principles” for the project that is “the next evolutionary step in modern residential design.” WATG has collaborated with Branch Technology for innovative 3D-printing process, making it easier to construct complex design forms. “The arching form provides structural rigidity to the residence, using various spring points throughout the floor plan, allowing the structure to carry roof loads and provide large open-plan living spaces, shaping structures in new ways without any restrictions,” stated the architects.
