Located in Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands, Moxon Architects’ “Culardoch Shieling” is a contemporary take on humble structures such as traditional Scottish crofts and shepherds’ huts or Swiss Alpine shacks. Its monolithic form evokes the work of Alvar Aalto and its irregular cutout windows at once bring to mind Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame Du Haut church at Ronchamp. The 47-square-meter mountain hut sits at the foot of Culardoch looking out across the expanse of the scenic upper Glen Gairn. Moxon Architects designed the structure in wood, featuring a simple curved timber frame with deeply overhanging eaves and a heather-moss-stone covered roof. Designed for entertaining guests, the hut is fitted with a long table for hosting social gatherings. The interiors are clad in spruce. A wood-burning stove keeps the hut warm and enjoyable during the winter months. The window frames views of landscape features such as the granite tors on the top of Ben Avon or a bend in the river Gairn. The design opens out to the surrounding landscape while ensuring privacy for the client’s gatherings.“The hut was commissioned as an escape. Our design strives to be humble and humane but is also precise, playful and sophisticated,” says Ben Addy of Moxon Architects.“Culardoch Shieling” won the Chairman’s Award at the Scottish Design Awards in May. Eric Parry, the Chairman of the Jury, called the hut “delicious……a very well-considered piece of architecture.”For more details, visit: https://moxonarchitects.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the project.
