R & Company, New York, is hosting a survey of Italian Radical Design from 1965-75. Curated by Maria Cristina Didero, the exhibition has come together after a decade of research and interviews with the architects of the movement. “SuperDesign” presents visionary works along with rare archival drawings and photographs from the period that was marked by a tumultuous political climate in Italy. The radicals expressed their political ideologies through demonstrations, manifestos, and used symbolic imagery in their designs referencing to the political scene and pop culture of those times. The exhibition presents some of the most progressive drawings, objects and furniture giving an insight into the ambitious movement. The designs use pop imagery and appear to be playful, while hiding deeper meanings. The works on view include a red lip shaped sofa “Bocca,” a coat rack shaped like a cactus, and iconic works by Superstudio. Lapo Binazzi is one of the few radicals who is still making artworks today. “SupeDesign” showcases Binazzi’s “Doric Temple,” one of his most critical works featuring a group of columns in polyurethane form. “Safari Sofa” is yet another dramatic piece, designed by Archizoom Associati in plastic and leopard-patterned fur, which is on display. The exhibition also presents photographs of interior spaces designed by the radicals during the 1960s and 1970s.Italian Radical Design marks an important moment in the history of design in Italy and it remains a major source of inspiration for contemporary artists. The exhibition runs through January 4, 2018, at R & Company, 82 Franklin Street, New York, 10013 .For more details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/r-and-company/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
