SITE Santa Fe is ready to welcome visitors in its new building designed by SHoP Architects. The expansion, which opened recently, adds 36,000 square feet of interior and exterior spaces to the Southwest’s eminent contemporary art space.SHoP principal and project director, Ayumi Sugiyama’s design for the new building underlines SITE’s role as a dynamic and progressive cultural hub, with an increasing international profile. The building expansion features multi-purpose workspace for local and regional students, an experimental exhibition gallery space, a new auditorium, and outdoor social spaces, including the Sky Terrace and the Entrance Sculpture Court.SHoP principal Christopher Sharples said, “We wanted the design to lend a quality of intimacy to the space but also open it up to the bustling Railyard district.” He added that the new gallery space, outdoor gathering spaces, and the new entrance “signal a mature sophistication throughout the space while also creating a new iconic presence for the institution as it moves forward.”SITE Santa Fe, founded in 1995, held United States’ first international biennial of contemporary art. The institution has held 10 biennials since then and more than 100 exhibitions featuring over 700 international artists. Irene Hofmann, Phillips Director and Chief Curator, SITE Santa Fe, said that the new expansion will strengthen the institute’s ability to “showcase cutting edge contemporary art and expand the traditional museum experience.”For more details, visit: https://sitesantafe.org/Click on the sldieshow for a sneak peek at the project.
