Carpenters Workshop Gallery, San Francisco, in partnership with 836M Gallery, is presenting their inaugural exhibition “West Coast Pop-Up” in San Francisco. This collection will feature works by prominent American and European artists and artists’ collectives such as Studio Drift, Random International, Maarten Baas, Vincenzo de Cotiis, Ingrid Donat, Frederik Molenschot, Studio Job, Sebastian Brakjovic, Charles Trevelyan, Johanna Grawunder, Nacho Carbonell, Pierre Jeanneret, and California native Rick Owens.Ingrid Donat’s work invokes the majestic spirit of 1920s Art Deco designers like Pierre Legrain and Armand-Albert Rateau.Sebastian Brajkovic expresses a series of constant contradictions in his work: between past and present; theory and practice; convention and innovation.Using materials such as steel and concrete, the industrial origins of Nacho Carbonell’s works are forgotten when we see the natural forms they evoke.Vincenzo de Cotiis likes to describe his work as “perfect imperfection.” By mixing ‘old’ with ‘new,’ ‘precious’ with ‘industrial,’ and combining ‘rough’ and ‘raw’ textures with ‘smooth’ and ‘polished’ surfaces, the designer blends both past and present to create transformative and organic pieces.Johanna Grawunder began her career as an architect before turning to lighting design.Wendell Castle’s work is renowned for its sarcastic humor and outstanding sculptural use of materials.Considered to be one of the most influential Dutch designers of the beginning of the 21st century, Maarten Baas if often described as an “author designer,” such that his works lie at the intersection of art and design.Frederik Molenschot is part of the internationally acclaimed Dutch Design movement.Random International is best known for its experiential installation “Rain Room,” which attracted queues of visitors at The Barbican in London in 2012 and the MoMA in New York in 2013.Studio Drift proposes a distinct mix of hi-tech and poetic imagery, a signature aesthetic of the Amsterdam-based design studio.Studio Job’s savoir-faire craftsmanship floats between audacity, exuberance and technical prowess.Rick Owens’ designs evoke original furniture through archetypes, like the ceremonial chair “Curial” (Alabaster). This exhibition runs through January 17, 2018, at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, 836 Montgomery Street – San Francisco, CA 94133.For details, visit: carpentersworkshopgallery.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
