Galerie Alain Marcelpoil, Paris houses an extensive array of furniture by designer André Sornay.André Sornay (1902-2000) designed furniture that was a combination of tradition and modernity. The gallery has an extensive collection of creations by the designer such as chairs, tables, desks, and stands. Sornay was deeply influenced by Bauhaus and the Stijl movement. These movements attempted to mesh together elements of art and architecture. He belonged to a new generation of artists and designers who created objects that catered to a more modern outlook and eager to break away from a traditional setting. Sornay’s sofa-bed created out of oak with brass nails and two sliding backrest is a perfect example. The designer developed his first patent in 1932 with the concept of cloutage depicting airplane rivets. The use and alignment of nails became a decorative element as well as a trademark. Sornay also developed a system that would speed up assembling of furniture through various patent applications between 1953 and 1955. Among these, the Sornay tigette was a pioneering move and paved way for what we now know as self-assembly or kit furniture. The bookcase with two sliding doors created from orange lacquered wood and solid mahogany at Galerie Alain Marcelpoil is an example of the designer’s artistic prowess. The Galerie Alain Marcelpoil was founded in 2006 by Lyon born Alain Marcelpoil. For over 15 years the gallery has promoted the work of designer André Sornay and simultaneously explored the works of other artists as well. An art Nouveau enthusiast in the 1980s, Marcelpoil turned to Art Deco and looked into the twentieth-century artists from the Lyon region, therein he discovered Sornay’s modern and innovative creations.André Sornay’s designs are available at Galerie Alain Marcelpoil, 28 Rue de Seine, 75006 Paris, France. For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/alain-marcelpoil-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the designer’s creations.
