Historic England’s yearly review of the most vulnerable and precious historic sites in the UK has yielded 328 new sites, including the oldest gasholder in the world, an ancient Neolithic tomb and a church in London that has links to Charles Dickens. These heritage sites are deemed to be “at risk” and need immediate attention.Dating back to 1830 when the gas industry had just begun taking wing, the Gasholder No 2, located at London’s Fulham gasworks has no replacement. Back then, it was twice as large as the majority of gasholders and was considered the biggest in the world. The Grade II structure features wrought iron work by hand and is being eroded mainly by vegetation, notes The Guardian. The Royal Pavilion Garden in Brighton extends around the Royal Pavilion designed by John Nash. It was designed to be a pleasure palace by the sea for the next King George IV. It is on the list of sites at risk as its snaking pathways, sprawling lawns, shrubbery and drives have borne the brunt of increasing tourism. Litter bins, fencing, lighting and signage have marred its beauty but Historic England is working on a conservation management plan along with Brighton and Hove Council. There are also several churches on the list such as the 18th century St Anne’s Limehouse and St George the Martyr in Southwark. Suffolk’s 18th century Grade II* structure, Drinkstone Smock Mill and Trethevy Quoit, a chambered tomb or dolmen in Cornwall are also at risk. It isn’t as though no conservation is taking place though. 387 monuments, buildings and sites were salvaged last year, including a tollhouse in Stratford-upon-Avon, Sandycombe Lodge, a villa in Twickenham and the erstwhile RAF Barnham atomic bomb store in Suffolk.Click below to view the slideshow.
