Adjaye Associates along with Ron Arad Architects and Gustafson Porter + Bowman have been chosen to design the UK Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre from over 92 entries that were received for the international design competition.UK Holocaust Memorial will be located in Victoria Tower Gardens in Westminster, which Sir David Adjaye describes as “a park of Britain’s conscience.” The memorial will be an homage to the millions of people who were persecuted by the Nazis. On the outside, a subtle grass landform and the tips of the Memorial’s fins will attract the visitor to find out more about the structure. The Memorial design will feature 23 tall bronze fins. The spaces in between the fins represent the 22 countries where Jewish communities were murdered during the Holocaust. The in-between space will allow only one visitor to walk through the way, with each path leading to the Threshold — a massive hall for contemplation. The Memorial will also have an underground Learning Center, a silent space for reflection on the various forms of hatred like Islamophobia, racism, and anti-Semitism, and the role of institutions and the society to encourage respect. The exit route will be designed such that on leaving the Memorial, the visitor is confronted with the view of the Houses of Parliament, affirming the hope and reality of democracy. When complete, the Memorial will stand along with similar structures including the Burghers of Calais, the statue of Emmeline Pankhurst, and the Buxton Memorial, serving as a reminder of injustice and calling upon the collective need to oppose it.
