Richard Meier & Partners recently announced the completion of Cittadella Bridge, the firm’s first vehicular and pedestrian bridge. This modern structure in precast-concrete and painted steel connects the city of Alessandria with an eighteenth-century fort across the Tanaro River in Italy. As Richard Meier describes, the bridge acts as “a link between the past and the future of the city” by reconnecting Piazza Gobetti with the citadel that is a proposed UNESCO World Heritage site. The 185-meter long bridge with a surface area of 4,150 meters has demarcated pedestrian walkways and vehicular route, making it safe for people to walk. Over the time, the bridge will evolve into a plaza as the city finds a new relationship with the river. The opposing curves of the bridge create a dynamic arrangement, making the structure an iconic reference point that is visible from several locations in the city. The painted steel structure and white precast concrete draw attention to the environmental changes while the porfido stone pavement finds continuity in the streetscapes of Alessandria.Richard Meier & Partners is an internationally-renowned firm led by Pritzker Prize laureate Richard Meier. The firm has won over 300 design awards including prestigious felicitations from American Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects. For more details, visit: www.richardmeier.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the project.
