The Center for Architecture, New York invites visitors to explore the transformative potential of scaffolding, through the exhibition “Scaffolding,” which opened recently as part of Archtober. Curated by independent researcher Greg Barton, the exhibition will examine the history and extraordinary applications of scaffolding as a kit-of-parts technology, providing novel forms of inhabitation and access.Shohei Shigematsu and OMA New York have disrupted the architectural space of The Center for Architecture with an immersive installation of actual scaffolding, exploring scaffolding as an object as well as a process. This simple construction process is transformed into a compelling installation, highlighting its flexibility, modularity, and ephemerality that makes it a robust building material. The installation design emanates from construction scaffolding seen in and around New York City, with an estimated 280 miles of scaffolding occupying the city at any given time. The exhibition also gives a glimpse into the history of scaffolding from the wooden beams of medieval builders and bamboo in Asia to the industrialized steel and aluminum tubes found today on construction sites around the world, highlighting how the material retains an integral role in architecture despite the technological leaps.“Scaffolding” is on view through January 18, 2018 at The Center for Architecture, 536 La Guardia Place, NY, NY 10012For details, visit: www.cfafoundation.org Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
