Architects Anna Liu and Mike Tonkin have built a two-storey extension and restoration of their Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in London called “The Sun Rain Room.” A coffered roof-shaped like the arc of the sun surrounds an open patio and when it rains, the water fills the tank and then the patio.Meant to serve both as a home and a studio for their architectural practice, the extension makes excellent use of irrigation and solar energy, notes The Guardian. Inspired in part by the classical detailing of structures in Bath, the extension also features a bedroom underneath.A plywood roof held up by the perimeter walls of the rear courtyard permits the entry of maximum light into a patio garden. The rainwater that gets accumulated at the top of the townhouse flows through a pipe and then the curved roof, finally ending up in a spout above an elongated rainwater harvesting tank.A mere press of a button allows the tank to fill the patio with water, turning it into a reflective pool. Tonkin and Liu have used a slim 110mm structural shell for the roof, and along with the round coffered skylights, it resembles the wave pattern of raindrops falling in the pool. The architects call it “a good place to be on a bad day”.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the show. Read more
