“Houston: Genetic City. Envisioning a Future Post-Industry, Post-Oil, Post-Sprawl” an exhibition of works at Aedes Architekturforum, Berlin.As Houston goes on to become the third populous city in the United States changing typologies present in challenges. The exhibition is an attempt on behalf of the students from the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design along with professors and Pritzker Prize laureate Thom Mayne, of Morphosis, to develop urban scenarios that respond to different phenomena. The concept of Genetic City is not top down or formal planning models but based on the culture of ad-hoc planning. It consists of speculative proposals that respond to large-scale phenomena. The show is on based on three themes Vacancies, Energy City, and The Unzoned City. The exhibit includes maps, diagrams, drawings, models and virtual reality walkthroughs, including master plans, building designs, and spatial strategies.The industrial city of Houston is the most populous city in the state of Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States with a Census-estimated 2016 population of 2.303 million. The economy of the city has an industry based foundation of energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, and transportation. Nicknamed the "Space City", Houston is a global city, with strengths in business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine, and research.
